With March finally here, the official start of spring isn’t far behind. As the weather begins to transition toward warm sunshine, many people are already looking for ways to transform their outdoor areas in time for spring entertainment. While you might not have much experience designing a functional and comfortable exterior space, the principles aren’t too different from establishing a cohesive decor layout inside your home.
Cohesive themes inside and out
Renowned designer Charles Eames had this to say about his craft, “Design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as to accomplish a particular purpose.” When you set out to establish the decor of the exterior of your home, you can use this principle as your guide. While interior and exterior decorating do have some unique differences, the importance of a cohesive theme is the same. Once you have discovered what you want out of backyard area, you can go about placing outdoor furniture so as to best accomplish that goal.
Wood was a favorite material of the Eameses
Eames and his wife Ray were perhaps best known for their experimental work with wood, which is an ideal material for designing a comfortable and stylish outdoor entertainment space. You can use this material to inspire the overarching theme of your yard’s aesthetic – consider establishing a rustic, natural look.
Beyond wooden outdoor furniture such as patio tables, benches and chairs there are many other ways you can incorporate this warm, natural material into your design. For starters, wooden arches are perfect for creating a sheltered entryway to your backyard. A couple of lattice frames scattered across the space can also support a beautiful assortment of flowers, vines and ivy to reinforce the role of nature in your decor.
Entend the look to a garden
Building on this theme, you can also use wood to enhance a simple garden patch. Edging the area with a miniature wooden fence will provide an attractive border for your plants and flowers while also serving to keep out unwanted pests.
By experimenting with the various applications of wood furniture just as Charles and Ray Eames did, you’ll find a whole new aesthetic for your home’s exterior.
