The shade should never overlap the edge of the tabletop. Measure the height and circumference of your table, rather than rely on eyeball guesses. It&#8217;s better to be safe than sorry. Conversely, your table should not dwarf your lamp either. For end tables, the diameter of the shade should be at least half the width of the table. Long consoles and sideboards can work with smaller lamps if used in pairs. This creates a pleasing visual symmetry. Desk lamp size should vary based on the size of the desk.
