Who makes the finest quality outdoor patio furniture?

The most effective architectural design creates a seamless harmony between indoor and outdoor spaces. Screened-in porches, covered decks, pergolas and loggias blur the lines between what is considered inside and out. Consequently, interior designers now take a more holistic approach when planning for upscale clientele who want to incorporate both.

The U.S. deck furniture market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.2% from 2020 to 2027. (Source: Grand View Research)

High-end indoor furniture manufacturers often don’t produce outdoor lines. Consequently, finding the equivalent quality in garden or poolside furnishings can be difficult. We’ve compiled a growing list of the best luxury outdoor furniture brands for discerning clients unwilling to sacrifice style for durability [Robinson (2014)].

These companies combine artistic design with premium materials and best-in-class production techniques to create luxurious lounge and dining sets, as well as hospitality-grade cantilever umbrellas. They demonstrate a commitment to excellent service, attention to detail and a focus on environmental responsibility. These traits make a big difference in how outdoor furnishings look and last. They may be harder to find and more expensive, but these brands are worth it.

Below are the latest additions to our best outdoor furniture brands list. Check out other sections for past inclusions.

Bonacina – Rich heritage of crafting exquisite wicker seating

Pair of reclined sunloungers with metal frames and tan woven bodies on a snowy hardwood deck
Bonacina 1889’s stylish Bikini Chaise Lounge has an adjustable design that easily goes from upright to reclined

For over 135 years, Bonacina has designed and produced exquisite wicker furniture with cultural connections to the past and an awareness of innovative modern design, techniques and materials. The world-renowned Italian company’s craftsmen handmake each piece with careful attention to detail. Their distinguished line of outdoor furnishings maintains the rich look and impeccable quality of their indoor collections.

Bonacina utilizes over a century of experience in bending and weaving natural materials to create new outdoor pieces using synthetic materials such as Polypeel, Polycore and Bopifil. These high-performance non-toxic, recyclable thermoplastics and polyethylene materials provide the durability required of patio furniture while reinforcing the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Their designs combine functionality with aesthetics and organic lines to seamlessly integrate into open-air spaces from the mountains to the sea.

Bonacina’s iconic Bikini lounge chair from designer Franco Bizzozzero is a dynamic piece of outdoor seating. It has a sliding seat and base, allowing it to convert from an upright position to a reclined chaise lounge. Bikini was a 19th edition Compasso d’Oro award winner for innovative industrial design. Another eye-catching Bonacina design is the Manta armchair from the D’Urbino Lomazzi Studio. The stackable seat boasts great comfort thanks to its enveloping and ergonomic shape.

Shore – Innovative ergonomic rugs and soft furnishings

Three neutral-colored silicone weave outdoor chaise lounges with headrest pillows next to a pool
Elegantly curved outdoor lounge seating from Shore features durable silicone stretched over marine-grade foam

Shore was founded on the belief that merging technical innovation with beautiful design can result in sophisticated products that are luxurious and invigorate your life. The London-based design studio uses high-performance non-toxic silicone cord and artisanal hand-weaving techniques to create stunning ergonomic rugs and textured soft furnishings. Their bespoke collections are offered in a spectrum of over 100 hand-mixed colors. The finishes and fabrics are UV and weather-resistant. Unlike traditional rubber or foam that flatten or compress, Shore’s unique silicone cord maintains its form and springs back to provide ongoing support. Additionally, it can withstand prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures and submersion in salt water.

Their inaugural product – the Shore Rug is a unique hybrid item that merges anti-fatigue qualities with the aesthetic appeal of a finely handwoven floor covering. The deep weave rug provides cushioned support and can even be used as a standing desk mat to ease the time in front of a computer. The company expanded into soft furnishings and now boasts a line of sofas, lounge seating, benches and poufs for lazing outdoors.

Beltempo – Modern artisanal quality outdoor furnishings

Two reddish wood deck chairs and a curved sofa with white upholstery facing a round coffee table on an oceanside deck
Hemingway reclining lounge chairs from Beltempo are artisan-quality and handcrafted

Beltempo is an exclusive manufacturer of luxury outdoor furniture with productions based in Peru. Italian designer Marco Sangiorgi founded the company. His family’s roots in the furniture industry date back to 1870 when they opened a gallery in the famous Pallazo Borghese. Influenced by Leonardo Da Vinci, his passion for perfection and artisanal excellence can be seen in Beltempo’s designs, which are works of timeless art. They blend traditional woodworking and goldsmithing techniques with 21st-century technology to create contemporary pieces using sustainable FSC-certified teak and marine-grade 316 stainless steel.

Their array of sun loungers ranges from the classic lines of the wooden Hemingway Lounger to the sleek modern curves of the metallic Tropical Sun Chaise. Beltempo also has a variety of hospitality-grade high tables, bar stools and dining sets that are perfect for luxury residences, hotels and yachts.

Tupelo – Sculpted marine-grade plastic pool & lounge seats

Two abstract white polyethylene chairs sitting in the shallow end of a pool
Tupelo’s ergonomic polyethylene seating is waterproof, seamless and extremely durable

Texas-based Tupelo Goods pairs rotational molding with meticulous design to create strong and durable outdoor seating pieces with a sculptural look. These ergonomic furnishings are constructed using marine-grade polyethylene. This material gives each angled chair and chaise incredible durability to withstand the harshest environments. The UV-resistant and waterproof material is also used for whitewater kayaks. So, it’s built to take on the rigors of heavy-duty use and extended water submersion. Each seamless unibody seat is available in vibrant colors and chic neutral tones.

Tupelo’s lounge seating was designed to accommodate in-pool use on baja or sun shelves. They fill with water to maintain stability and prevent buoyancy. Their Loop Lounge Chair has an alluring profile and will add visual intrigue to any outdoor setting. They recently introduced a sleek ergonomic Deck Chaise. The stylish seating conforms to your body’s contours and can be used in the water or poolside on a patio or deck.

Kindle Living – Awarded heat & light for the design-obsessed

Two oversized black lamp-style patio heaters with ridged surface outside of a hotel doorway
The commercial-grade Allison gas patio heater from Kindle Living has a classically sculpted design

Kindle Living has an unmistakable signature style in the outdoor heating and lighting industry. Their innovative designs combine cutting-edge technology and glamorous sophistication. The result is countless awards and many residential and commercial installations worldwide. Each heater and lamp is made with recyclable resin that is lightweight yet durable and UV-protected. Kindle Living’s trademark floor lamp design is a modern take on a familiar silhouette. It’s available in four heater models and two light-only versions with shade and finish options. The heaters can be fueled by propane or natural gas and crank out 40,000-50,000 Btu/hr respectively within an 8-foot radius.

Their flagship Allision heater has a voluptuous sculpted design with a scratch, impact and dent-resistant composite body. A light can be integrated with the white alabaster version to provide ambiance and illumination when the sun goes down. Kindle Living’s Sierra heater is perfect for those seeking a more contemporary one-of-a-kind look. Its tapered pyramid-style body is handcrafted in Southern California from sustainably grown honey bamboo or African mahogany.

What should I consider when buying premium deck furniture?

There are many factors to consider when shopping for high-end outside furniture. The type of outdoor space you have is important (e.g. hardwood deck, cement pool, covered patio, screened-in porch). So is how you plan to use the area. Do you host a lot of dinner parties, or are you more likely to just lounge in the sun? Each type of furniture has its own plusses and minuses for each situation. Outdoor lounge furniture may prioritize comfort, while patio dining furniture may emphasize dynamic seating capability. Market umbrellas are great for UV protection during the day but outdoor fireplaces and fire pits are welcomed when the sun goes down and temperatures drop.

Likewise, the climate is a critical thing to think about if you want your expensive exterior furnishings to last. Some materials do better than others in wet or hot environments. Additionally, deck furniture manufacturers each have their own specific criteria for optimizing the use of their products. Take a look at our insightful resource guides to evaluate your outdoor needs and options. They provide additional pointers to keep your furniture looking great and maintaining peak performance for years.

Frequently Asked Questions – Luxury Outdoor Furniture

Why is patio furniture so expensive?

Unlike regular indoor furniture, patio furniture not only has to look great but it also has to be able to withstand being exposed to the elements. Changes in temperature can cause materials to expand and contract, so outdoor tables and chairs need to be designed and treated so that they will not crack or become less stable from season to season.

Cheap or untreated materials are more susceptible to water damage, while high-quality hardwoods and metals with powder-coasting are much better-suited to last and avoid rot or rust. Similarly, low-end fabrics will fade in the sun, while high-tech solution-dyed textiles are durable and colorfast. Inexpensive patio furniture may look great for a while but you’ll likely have to replace it every year or so.

Luxury outdoor furniture may cost more initially, but it will look great for many seasons and save you money in the long run.

When should you order deck furniture online?

QUICK ANSWER – Order custom luxury outdoor furniture 3-5 months ahead of when you want them delivered (brand dependent).

You did your homework and found the perfect outdoor dining table and chairs. They’re constructed of high-quality materials that are right for your environment and the style complements your architecture and existing decor. The website selling the pieces has a solid reputation and reasonable prices. However, the lead time is 10-14 weeks or longer, which means you won’t be able to enjoy them until the end of Summer at best.

Unfortunately, unless you get lucky and are drawn to items and color combinations that fall into a manufacturer’s “QuickShip” (QS) program, you’re probably going to have to wait a while for delivery. Even then, it may be a few weeks for replenishment containers to arrive, if you don’t snare some of the early-season inventory.

Many of the finest patio furniture brands are based in Europe but have manufacturing facilities in Asia and Indonesia. So, sometimes there may be stock in Belgium or France but you still have to wait until the next ship departs, before the container is received by their US distributor warehouse. Otherwise, custom orders have to be placed with the factory, produced, shipped to Europe and then travel to the US. The timeline is also highly dependent on the supply chain at the time (as we all learned the hard way during the COVID-19 pandemic).

If you want to have that al fresco dining set in time to sit down with friends and family during the 4th of July weekend, you should probably place an online order sometime in February (3-5 months in advance). If it comes early, then you’ll need to have a place to set the boxes if you’re not able to set it up immediately.

We did receive them and I’m checking into things. It’s a little difficult since most of the images show the frames without any surfaces for seating (i.e. no sling or weave). The collection is unique looking with its orange crisscrossed frames and it certainly looks sturdy.

Gio, Paola Lenti is actually scheduled to be added in our next expansion of this list. Some of the ultra high end manufacturers who also have indoor lines were bypassed in favor brands that primarily focus on patio furniture and accessories. I’m less familiar with Slide Design, but they seem to have a very artistic and sculpted look that is reminiscent of some of the more minimalist collections from Vondom. Thanks for the heads up, I’ll have to do a little research.

Where can I find these lines? Do you have to buy directly from the company, or is there some kind of upscale Home Depot that has a showroom featuring multiple designers?

    • Avatar for Decor InteriorsDecor Interiors says

      at

Stina, some of these companies do sell to residential customers, but most sell wholesale to retailers (brick and mortar or e-commerce). The big showrooms that you mentioned are usually part of a trade show or permanent “mart” that deal strictly with retailers, corporate buyers and interior designers. However, you can often go to a manufacturer’s website to find physical stores near you that carry their brands. Otherwise, many online stores like ours carry multiple patio furniture brands, or can add new ones on demand.

      Reply

I suggest you reach out the contact email on their website, most of them will contact you with the person in charge of that area or sending you to a retail store close to you. Unfortunately, some of those brands are very difficult to find on the sample floor of regular mid-end showrooms.

I love the designs that utilize teak so those are my short list currently. Is there anything special that needs to be done on an ongoing basis to treat the wood and keep it in good condition? Or is it usually treated already? This would be for a Pacific coastal residence.

    Reply
    • Avatar for Decor InteriorsDecor Interiors says

      at

Many brands pre-treat their teak to help protect it against the elements, although there are differences in finishing between what they sell internationally and in the U.S. Obviously, you’ll want to keep it free from dirt and prevent an accumulation of water, as standing water is a playground for biological processes that could be a health issue, or damage wood over a long period of time, although teak is very resilient.

Teak is also oil-rich by nature, but you can maintain its warm golden tone by lightly treating it regularly with oil. Or, you can let it patina naturally into a silver grey – it’s up to your aesthetic taste.

As far as your Pacific coast location goes, you just want to be wary of salt in the air and water, depending on how close you are to the beach. It’s not so much an issue for the teak, but more for any metal frames that may be supporting the wood. Salt can play havoc with untreated metals and lead to rust and corrosion.

Heidi, you should probably take a look at our guide – Patio Umbrella Buying Guide

Your specific climate, usage and budget all factor in determining the best materials for your patio umbrella. Typically, the closer/tighter the fabric weave, the less harmful rays can penetrate the canopy. Sunbrella acrylic or Coolaro polyethylene fabrics are premium brands in outdoor shade protection, which offer a variety of colors from which to choose. They aren’t cheap, but they will keep you safe from UV rays and last a long time without fading. Olefin and polyester canopies offer less, but adequate protection, at a lower cost.

If I live by the ocean, what is the best outdoor material that I should be looking for in patio furniture? Metal gets rusted out so quickly…

    Reply
    • Avatar for Decor InteriorsDecor Interiors says

      at

You are correct that most metal will rust when exposed to salt air and water. However, both aluminum and stainless steel can be safely used if they are powder-coated. This electrostatic process inures the metal against corrosion and allows you to add color to the finish. Teak patio furniture works well in most environments, but you’ll need to oil it if you don’t want it to patina into a light silver color. One of the best modern materials for coastal installations is all-weather synthetic wicker. It has the look of traditional plant-based wicker, but the resin is stronger, resists water damage and fading.
