How we define service
Our Story
In 2007, Bill Ferris decided to create a different, more pleasant way to shop online. He was tired of banner ads, pop-ups and, to be honest, the hoarder-like clutter of many retail websites. He also found that phone calls were often answered by people unfamiliar with the products, while emails could seem to disappear into the void.
Inspired by high-end boutique clothing stores, he set out to create a new kind of online store - one that would help customers find the right items without sensory overload. He also wanted to provide the same level of personal attention he hoped for when shopping himself.
Bill Ferris
Bill has an MBA from Duke University and started his professional career with The Coca-Cola Company in brand management. His love of mid-century modern furniture can be traced to Hans Wegner chairs his family brought back from Europe in the early 1970s. Over time, he's developed a passion for the Art Deco period and French Country shabby chic style. Truth be told, he's also become a bit obsessed with the industrial steampunk designs seen in films like Hugo, 12 Monkeys and City of Lost Children.
Quality begins with our vendor partners
At Decor Outdoor, we focus on brands that were built for hospitality and commercial environments, but whose designs feel right at home in upscale residential spaces too. Our goal is to offer products that can handle heavy use, look tailored rather than trendy and stay easy to live with day to day.
What we look for in the brands we carry
- Commercial-grade construction – We prioritize materials and build quality suited to hotels, resorts and restaurants, so pieces stand up to real-world use rather than just occasional weekends.
- Design that belongs outdoors – We lean toward modern and classic lines over transitional styles, with collections that feel intentional, cohesive and at home in high-end residential spaces.
- Real options, not just one-size-fits-all – Our partners offer depth in fabrics, finishes, sizes and configurations, so designers and homeowners can dial in exactly what they need instead of compromising.
- Warranty and support that match the price point – We look for substantial warranties, responsive service teams and easy access to replacement components like cushions, canopies and parts. These are investment pieces and we want them to stay in service, not head to the landfill.
- Thoughtful materials and innovation – Proprietary materials, patented technologies and responsible sourcing – including more sustainable woods and finishes – are strong positives when we evaluate a line.
- Trade-ready by default – For patio furniture and umbrellas, we focus on hospitality and commercial-grade collections, so the same products can serve designers, commercial projects and homeowners who want that level of performance.
Certifications and standards
Many of the brands we carry use third-party testing and certifications to back up their claims – especially around fabric safety, UV protection, finishes, electrical safety and outdoor performance. For residential customers, labels like OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, UPF 50+ and FSC-certified woods are usually the most meaningful. For contractors and commercial buyers, additional standards for fire safety, emissions, coatings and electrical or gas appliances matter because they're tied to liability and code compliance.
We're not the engineers or test labs, and we don't pretend to be. Instead, we work with vendors who can document their certifications, answer technical questions and support the specific needs of hospitality, commercial and design professionals. When a project requires certain ratings or standards, we help you identify options and connect you with detailed specs from the manufacturer.
